Vo Van Thuong steps down as Vietnam’s state president

March 21, 2024

Vietnam’s lawmaking National Assembly (NA) dismissed Vo Van Thuong from his posts of President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam for the 2021-26 tenure and Deputy of the 15th NA at an extraordinary meeting in Hanoi on Thursday morning. He has failed to fulfill the responsibility of setting an example for officials and Party members, particularly crucial for members of the Politburo, the Secretariat, and the Party Central Committee. He has also been held accountable as a leader in accordance with Party rules and state laws. Vo Van Thuong, 54, a native of the Mekong Delta province of Vinh Long, was sworn in as state president in March 2023. Thuong served as a member of the all-powerful Politburo from January 2016 and a member of the Party Central Committee from January 2011.
