Why gender imbalance is high in Sơn LaAlthough progress has been made to ensure gender equality in Vietnam, many families still have a preference towards sons, hoping sons to be the breadwinners when they grow up. In extreme cases women have been known to illegally abort their baby if it is female. In Son La province, the rate is 100 girls for every 117 boys. Local authorities say changing their perception is key to tackle this issue.
